Running every Saturday and Sunday from 09:30-10:30 am.

Content:

Get out on the water (either on an optimist or laser), learn a sailing knot and some sailing lingo, "aye-aye Captain!"

Adult Sailing Scheme

Requirements:

Age range: 16+

Minimum: 16

Level 1 - Start Sailing

This is a 16-hour course and suitable for complete beginners who want to try sailing introducing you to sailing with all you need to know to get afloat under supervision. You will learn how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering. By the end of the course, you should be able to sail in light winds under supervision.

Level 2 - Basic Skills

Setting out the foundations of sailing for you.

At level 2 (16 hrs) you will learn about rigging, launching and sailing in all directions. You will cover capsize recovery, at least 3-4 knots, basic meteorology, rules of the road and essential safety knowledge. The aim of this course is to help you to be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions.

Start Racing - Short

This is a 3 hrs short course on racing the Laser class dinghy, which can be completed in a day. The course includes rules of the road, racing theory, and practical course exercises on the water to get you ready for race day.

Youth Sailing Scheme

Requirements:

Age range: 8-16

Minimum age: 8

Can swim 25 metres

 

Stage 1

This is a 16-hour course and suitable for complete beginners who want to try sailing. By the end of this course, you will have a basic understanding of how a boat sails and have some practical experience of steering and handling the boat, including its parts and how to tie two essential knots. Learn to assist in rigging, launching and securing a boat.

Stage 3

Stage 3 (16 hrs) gets more advanced, covering rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. It is equivalent to Level 2 in the (Adult) National Sailing Scheme. You will cover topics such as rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory. By the end of the course, you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangular course including gybing and tacking in moderate conditions.

Stage 2

At Stage 2 you will cover a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help become a confident sailor. It is assumed that you have the basic knowledge covered in Stage 1. At Stage 2 you will learn about basic sailing skills, ropework and collision avoidance! After the course, you will be able to tack and control boat speed and understand the basic principles of sailing. You will have learned two more knots.

Stage 4

Stage 4 (16 hrs) moves you onto areas such as sailing a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solving a variety of problems afloat (optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double-handed). The course will look at rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats and recovering a man overboard. By the end of the course, you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangular course in moderate conditions.

Kids Introduction to Sailing

Kids love the water and learning to sail at a young age is great fun. We run a sailing course dedicated to 6 to 8-year-olds. This course is made up of shorter sessions with a focus on fun and confidence-building. This is a course designed to build basic sailing and water confidence for youngsters. On completion, kids will be ready to sail supervised until they are able to take the Youth Courses upon reaching the required age range. completion, kids should be ready to sail supervised until they are able to take the Youth Courses upon reaching the required age range.

Content:

Basic sailing on an optimist & water confidence building, including fun water games. Learn 4 basic sailing knots, and turn (tack) in light winds.

Duration:

5 hours broken into 5x1 hour sessions, available on weekends from 09:30 am-12:30 pm.
